    Hi Anthony, have you heard of John Vervaeke? He's from a bit of a different corner of the internet, but I recommend checking out his Awakening from the Meaning Crisis series. He's a philosopher and a cognitive scientist from the University of Torronto, and his insights into how humans process infromation are really great. I think he underestimates the power of the Memory Palace technique, even though he knows about it. But if someone could persuade him about its potential, it could be big for the future of the Memory Palace, because he is quite influential I think. And thanks for everything you do!

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM День назад

      I do, but I'm skeptical that there is such a thing as "meaning" in the way some people use the term. There are a few videos on this channel that dig into this issue (especially the ones on Bruno and Nietzsche), my TEDx Talk, one of my books, etc. In any case, I can't find anything from Vervaeke to read apart from a few articles. I generally try to avoid talking about what people have talked about and prefer talking about what they've written about wherever possible. What I have read is not aligned enough to memory for me to start a conversation, but if someone wanted to arrange one, I'd show up. In terms of convincing others of the value of the Memory Palace, that is where I can agree there is a meaning "crisis." Persuasion has left the realm of human discussion and entered algorithmic impulse. But as Lynne and I discussed in this talk, there may be a very human reason why some of it is happening. But the crisis is not in meaning. The crisis is in something else altogether - at least as I see it from my little corner of the world, most of which is not on the internet. How could it be?

    • @jakubsebo4236
      @jakubsebo4236 День назад

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM Thanks for replying. Btw I did read your The Victorious Mind, and it was quite inspiring. Also it's great that someone on the internet is really dedicated to spreading the amazing tool of the memory palace. Actually, I want to study cognitive science one day and then do my best to make the memory palace as accessible to people as possible. I think it is also has potential to be a great tool in the pursuit of wisdom, mental health and spiritual transcendence, and you helped me realize this. When it comes to the meaning thing, I think that people use the word meaning in really many ways. However when Vervaeke is talking about the meaning crisis, I think he means primarily the concept of 'meaning in life'. From what I understood from him, meaning in life is a psychological-cognitive phenomenon that has been well documented and is fairly well established within cognitive science. But you shouldn't take it from me. One has to walk outside the cave himself. He also has two ted talks, which would give you a nice jist of what he's about without spending too much time if you're not convinced. He is supposed to publish a book by the same name in a the near term, and it is supposed to be a more or less simplified version of the lecture series. So I think the medium in which the information is conveyed is not a concern, however I also prefer books and more structured formats. But I also don't think that he has the truth. No one does. You don't. I don't. He doesn't. Lynne Kelly or anyone else doesn't either. It is my private opinion that truth will forever stay infinitely far away for us, but amazingly we can still move toward it. And different perspectives are necessary for us to gain a greater understanding of what we are and the world/nature/reality around us is, but ultimately there is only one reality, and we all live inside it. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense to me, although I haven't studied much yet. I'm afraid I don't quite get everything from your last paragraph. However I think that generally people find the though of learning to use the memory palace very difficult and uncomfortable, and also pretty useless, therefore not worth it. I can think of very many very practical uses for it, but I think think that the challenge is of showing people it's usefulness, and also help them imagine what it is more easily, and then help them learn it as easily as possible. I actually think that people are very open, you just have to know how to sell your idea.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM День назад

      Thanks for your considered response. Wonderful thinking. I do all that I can to demonstrate and dimensionalize the usefulness of mnemonics. I completely cheer any other person doing the same for their various interests. Where I would add nuance to our conversation until I have the benefit of reading a book by Vervaeke or related scholars is this: "Truth" is in my view a very different proposition than whether this or that person "has" it. If something is true, it's irrelevant who agrees, disagrees, has or does not have it. I actually think Vervaeke would agree at least to a certain extent with the Pure Immanent positions I take. He has certainly discussed some of them, rather favorably - just not in a format I would enjoy discussing. "In video x you said y" just isn't as solid as "in chapter x on page y you said z." I'm happy to extend further why I think very differently about truth and meaning than many others do, and I have on this channel already many other times. It's weird and wonderful to me that the philosophy of Pure Immanence is such a difficult pill for many people to swallow when it's delivered by philosophers, but sells millions of copies when it's packaged in particular ways. Finally, I would say that "you just have to know how to sell your idea" is a nice idea. But a crisis of meaning, if there is one, is generated by the idea that anyone owns the idea and great misery is created via the selling process. This is why I do not claim to own the "Memory Palace" and why nearly all my efforts are focused on giving as much as I can away for free. There is indeed "truth" in that, but I don't have it. We can just look around and independently confirm two things: 1) My claims are not dependent on me, my subjectivity or my personal wishes. They are replicated independently many times over. 2) As Gary Weber said, if you really have the knowledge, you won't be able to stop yourself from sharing it. Sadly, even if I can't stop myself, it is the case that various online initiatives do mount efforts to stop the free flow of information. Thus, there is the truth that we all "have," and that is whatever this present moment is, enjoy it while you can. Nothing guarantees that the status quo will last forever. Lynne and I basically covered this point with historical references that are veridical enough to be considered true. Looking forward to more discussion and thanks again for your thoughts so far.

    • @jakubsebo4236
      @jakubsebo4236 21 час назад

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM I meant the 'sell your idea' in a metaphorical sense, because I was too tired to explicate it. Of course I agree that no one owns or should own any idea. But selling your idea is a useful way to look at persuasion, although you might be right in that it is a way of framing the information sharing process that gets us stuck in unfavourable ways. Also, in your first response you said that you think the crisis is in something else altogether. I would love to hear what you mean. Also, I agree with your point of truth being independent of anyone. However I think we should be very careful with when we think that something is true or not, and what degree of certainty and self-awareness we bring with viewing something as true. When I say that someone has or doesn't have truth, I mean exactly that. The more one views the truth as something that can be known, which is to my view the same as seeing truth as something "possessable", the more he lives in illusion, which is the ignorance of his own ignorance. But why do I say this? Well, when I hear someone say that he thinks something in particular is true or can be regarded as such regardless of how anyone views it, he is falling exactly into this same trap. Do you see what I mean? About you two confirmed things: 1) I believe anyone's and everyone's claims ARE dependent of themselves, their view of the world or what they desire. I think that one should also be aware of such a thing as confirmation bias, which stems from the left-right hemisphere structure of our brain. Iain McGilchrist has written great books on the topic. I believe the person who is most aware of their irrationality and irrationality of humanity sees themselves more as believing certain things, rather than viewing any of their views as obejctive. 2) I agree that once you come to believe something, it is hard to resist sharing that. But there are problems with that too. That's why dialogue in the sense of dialogos is so important. Finally, I think there are more or less two ways to view the world when it comes to the aspect of trust: In one, you trust that everyone is acting with good intention, or at least in ignorance. In the second one, you believe that everyone has an ulterior motive, and is just playing power games or trying to get their primitive desires met in any possible way. I choose to believe in the first way. I think it is the case. Also, the second is ultimately a self-fulfilling prophecy, because distrust breeds distrust, and therefore power games. Because if we cannot trust each other, the only other relevant thing is who is on the top. Of course, it is not so black and white, and that is not the point. This trust/distrust worldview aspect is a spectrum, with the people far away from you philosophically and personally being the ones you trust the least, and the ones closest you trust the most. However I believe that this spectrum is real. Furthermore, I think that believing explicitely in the first way I outlined is a game-changing way to view the world, and is worlds apart from being on the spectrum. So would be not believing anyone at all, not even yourself, which would be the other pole, and that is called madness. I hope to hear your thoughts soon. P.S. tbh I think being so puritan about the media format is a little bit ridiculous in this context, but okay.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM 15 часов назад

      Let's begin an answer by noting how one interlocutor claims the other is "being puritan" with reference to an unexplained "context" ending with "but okay." But "okay" with reference to what? And according to whose authority? Based on what accepted meaning of the term "puritan"? Puritanism used to mean "the belief that it is important to work hard and control yourself, and that pleasure is wrong or unnecessary." Or, "strictness and austerity especially in matters of religion or conduct." There is in fact nothing austere about an individual interviewing wanting to have a least one book to refer to in order to have a singular point of reference around which to frame a conversation. But I will concede that there is something approaching meaninglessness to the point of "crisis" when wanting to refer to relatively fixed texts is considered puritan. I much prefer interviews that provide an alternative to the flourishing of video "interviews" and "discussions" by at least using one piece in writing to refer to, ideally a piece "authorized" by the author who wrote it (or authorized the edited version sent to market). I'm all for people who want to interview people just because they give a lot of interviews and say interesting things. But my preference not to is absolutely not puritan and the fact that anyone would use this term in the way that you have is what I mean by "the crisis lies elsewhere." You have used a particular form of rhetoric that far too many people accept without pushback. So I'd suggest you consider what impulse inside of you compels you to use such rhetoric after using the phrase "I believe" so often in your response. To mention "trust" and then end with a P.S. like yours pushes the notion of trust into a realm as meaningless as how you've used the word puritan. Were I to be or act as such a thing, I would at least like to have both it and the "context" your "but okay" pretends to accept without definition. I do not accept such diction, nor such vague references to "context," and it puzzles me that you would suggest I speak to anyone to persuade them of the value of the Memory Palace, ask for further qualification of a point and then end with a P.S. like that. But to answer your question, there may be something like a "crisis" in how often such rhetoric goes unquestioned. I am questioning it now and look forward to a considered response.

    10:07 I love that you mention this! I came up with this idea on my own (but based on other ideas I’d heard you talk about before) for grocery lists, but I do a bit more. I use my left hand as a memory palace with five stations and I use interaction between the items in each station to make the contents more memorable, and it works wonderfully! For example, maybe my thumb becomes a spigot spraying milk, and my index finger becomes a stalk of spinach, which becomes anthropomorphized and recoils from the spray of milk as it tries to stay dry. I think another element that makes the images memorable when using my own body as a memory palace is the “creepiness” of some of the images. If I actually focus on the image of my fingers becoming celery stalks or extruding eggs, it gives me just enough of the creeps to make a visceral impact, and I remember the list much better. Of course, I may have to buy more than five things, but often items are related in ways that allow me to optimize the imagery and I’m still able to get everything onto one hand. For example, “vegetables” usually involves 2-3 items, but a clever image can remember all three on a single station, or a sandwich can represent all the ingredients necessary for sandwich making on a single station, etc. I’ve never had any problems with limiting myself to five fingers, even when I’ve had significantly more than five items to buy.

    It hard, but perhaps consider saying "No" to certain foods. Nutrition is essential and food is a raw material which is converted into a drug utilised by the body to produce fuel. Think what happens to car engine if you put the wrong fuel in it- Yet every day we do just that harm to our ourselves and as a consequence head towards metabolic failure the damaging of vital organs the kidney, liver and heart. The brain requires a lot of energy it is one of the centres of memory. but others parts of the body organs, cells which house our memory, emotions. Emotions are an aspect our senses which come into awareness linked to instincts they help us nevigate our environment and stay safe. The brain is neuroplastic it can divert information make new or reconnect links. However, like an elastic band if stretched too much it could snap and not bounce back. If not used we may get neurodegenerative disease. Everything in moderation, a little poison (antidepression/antipsychotic/ sedative meditation) can be helpful for one. Atleast whilst nevigating for alternatives treatments. However, others may find they need to be on them longterm or permenantly to stop the cyclic mulberry bushing. Depending on the drug slowly is better than fast- titrate down/ taper off (weigh) Set a timetable for coming off completely be it a few days, week, fortnight, month or year. Look to replace the gap with something other than another drug a new hobby, academic pursuit or sort after job skill. If financially viable look for or request a functional/ integrative medical practioner who can liason with Psychiatrist/Medical team or try and find a doctor who is into holistics and not straight alopathic medicine. Why? alopathic medicine tends to deal with the symtoms (Symptoms are experienced when the 🐎 has bolted) it is good in event of medical emergency whereas functional/integrative/holistic is more management alternatives and preventative. Long/Short term who wants to be worse off and end-up medically lobotimise not to mention experience the other physical detriment? If they can avoid it? Unless that is you are a masochist. Practicing Magnetic Memory Techniqe Not a plug but Dr. Anthony Metivier has done all the work(Climbed on the shoulders of giants) placed it here, had set-up an easy access website which explains types of memory how to master and that may help to enhance or preserve memory whilst on medication and off it. Keeping those neuronetworks reconnected and growing whilst dopamine and other chemicals are being tempered with. Exercise may also stop the zombifycation of emotions by producing the feel good chems, (DA), (5HT), (NE ) abbreviated. In addition, help to counteract other effects such as weight gain caused by the munches and stave off metabolic failure. But you do need some treats otherwise may succumb to overeating when favourite foods are calling your name.

You read Doerr's Shell Collector and the next day ideas from that book come out of the wordwork in your own everyday life as in discovering that a resourceful neighbor is blind and the whole concept of blindness you realize is partly due to not 'seeing' the value of things. I go back and add what I have learned from the my own life to my thoughts on the story which seemed far fetched when I read it. We gain sight with these little ephiphanies. All the Light we Cannot See and often because we forget and do not think to catalog humble but important ideas.

    Things I find interesting and compelling from this conversation: 1. Mind maps are a wonderful tool. I already know this but I should definitely utilize it more. I could use more constraints in my life because I am left with things so open, I struggle to do things, especially being creative or learn, because there isn't a wall or a blip in the compass telling me which way I should pursue. This is one of those things where good to great open world games excel at: it may have the perception of "player's choice" but the truth is they are still constrained in such a way so that players always find something to do. 2. A lot of people are "waiting" when it comes to using memory techniques. I am definitely one of them--like I keep feeling I have to find something that is "worthwhile," whatever that means, to use the techniques. Meanwhile, I am in a weird purgatory where I want to use it and boost my mind but applications are lacking. Self-reflection and giving my mind certain constraints from day to day should be the immediate answer to "what should I use my memory for today?" 3. Memory as an act of creation. Now that's something I never thought before. I also love how Mark talks about "playing." This reminds me of when I studied physics at a university level and they love to throw you "toy problems" just so that students and even physicists know how problems can be solved. All in all, it's a great conversation with Mark. I did read one of his books once which details the techniques. I find it interesting that he touched upon creating stories for memory, as in using the creative part, before creating the places where those memories might reside (unlike you where the first thing you teach us is the palaces themselves). Then again, there is no correct answer as long as things work. And I should say that I do create stories in order to memorize certain passwords though I did not put them in any specific memory palace. Now that I am this far into my comment, I have been wanting to get into lucid dreaming again. I remember in the MMM Masterclass about remembering dreams but I never really checked out that section yet. Since knowing that you are dreaming is something that requires you remember certain things like doing reality checks and applying prospective memory, this could be something I would finally utilize the memory palaces that have been sitting idle and gathering dust all this time.

      I find the theme of waiting to take action fascinating and need to make a research project out of why it is so common. The latest conversation with Lynne Kelly I just released about The Knowledge Gene has me even more curious about what factors might be involved. As for dreams, this is one of my favorite memory realms. It can be incredibly insight-providing and fulfilling.
